Recreation

The Recreation Department provides a series of programs engaging the community members toward a healthy lifestyle through physical activity.  The employees comprise a team of thirty people dedicated to offering individual and group training programs, organizing indoor and outdoor sports activities, and being in charge of the whole operations as well as the maintenance of the arena, four parks, one beach and playing fields.

The activities offered indoor include fitness programs with fitness equipment and «Resist-a-ball», spinning, yoga, aerobic, bodybuilding, swimming, basketball, broomball, figure skating and hockey; outdoor activities offered are football, soccer, softball, cycling, canoeing, and running programs and golf.

The arena in the community, the Neoskweskau Complex, is considered a privileged place for sports and recreational activities, and also welcomes concerts and shows, but moreover is a gathering place for a variety of public or family events, such as public assemblies, special events, group meetings, wedding or funerals.

The yearlong calendar includes the participation of the Recreation Department during Aboriginal Day (1 or 2 days), the Summer Festival (10 days) and the annual local Pow Wow (3 days) held during a three day week-end in July. Other events include the hosting of inter-regional tournaments for basketball, hockey, broomball and volleyball, special events like the annual Stanley Longchap Golf Classic, the winter carnival and the New Year Celebrations. As well, Mistissini hosts the Bantam BB and Midget AA Cree Nation Bears teams, all-star hockey teams of the best players in the Cree Nation that compete against their peers in Abitibi Temiscamingue.
